Side Effects of AlloDerm Hernia Surgery

Most of the serious AlloDerm by LifeCell Corp side effects reported stem from the use of the skin graft as a hernia mesh or during abdominal repair. Plaintiffs allege that LifeCell recklessly marketed the product without properly evaluating the risk of side effects or warning about the potential for serious injury if the AlloDerm patch is not pre-stretched.

AlloDerm is comprised of allograft human tissue, which is harvested from cadavers of people who donated their organs. The tissue is stripped of the epidermis and cells and then freeze-dried to remove moisture and form a uniform allograft that is white in color.

The process of transforming human tissue into AlloDerm does not remove the elasticity, which allows the mesh to stretch like human skin. However, when AlloDerm is used for hernia repair, this may cause serious problems when AlloDerm stretches out over time, which is the reason many recipients have filed AlloDerm injury lawsuits.

When AlloDerm is not pre-stretched or implanted under significant tension to remove laxity, the surface area of the graft can increase 30-50%. To avoid AlloDerm hernia repair issues, surgeons must pre-stretch or suture AlloDerm under significant tension to ensure the laxity is removed as much as possible.

If the surgeon does not adhere to the correct procedures of AlloDerm surgery, the hernia patch can stretch, expand, thin out, pull, sag, loosen, spread or dissolve which can result in:

  • Hernia recurrence after AlloDerm surgery
  • Abdominal deformity
  • Abdominal pain and overall sickness
  • Continuing disability

AlloDerm skin graft products used in hernia repair procedures are also linked to these extremely serious side effects including:

  • Development of abscesses
  • Infection, which can become life-threatening
  • Graft explant
  • Tearing of the mesh patch
  • Defective patches
  • Perforation in the product causing tissue weakness
  • Injury to organs, blood vessels and other tissues that are close to the patched area
  • Adhesion failure
  • Failure of proper healing of surgical incisions
  • Mesh erosion
  • Inflammation
  • Swelling
  • Post-operative bulging
  • Bruising
  • Contusions
  • Pain
  • Soreness
  • Extreme discomfort

Patients who suffer from hernias that call for the use of AlloDerm skin graft products should be able to rest assured that they are receiving the best possible treatment. But when manufacturers become lax with their standards of quality or don't follow government safety regulations, serious injuries can be the result.

If you think you may have an injury that was caused by a defective AlloDerm product, you should seek immediate medical attention. Whenever possible, try to take photos of your injuries and document in writing your non-visual injuries, such as excessive pain and impairment.

If you or someone you love has been injured by AlloDerm side effects, you may want to consider filing a lawsuit. It is important that you contact a skilled AlloDerm lawyer who can assist you with understanding your legal rights.
